When we were teenagers, my lovely sister and I used to stay up late and have discussions. One night we decided to solve the problem of religious differences, religious oppression, etc. And we did. I don't remember which of us said it, or if it we developed the statement jointly, but it went something like this:

"Why do people have to subscribe to a specific system of beliefs to find enlightenment? Why don't we make religious mythology and figureheads moot? Why don't people act nice to each other not because an invisible deity told them to, but simply because acting kind and charitable is the right thing to do?

Not that I'd be into that, but still."
