It's kind of hard to make out, but it says "Secretly I hate college and only attend to prove them all wrong." It was written on the bathroom wall.

I want to teach literary allusions with music, but I'm afraid my students won't get the allusions:

"Brian Wilson" by Barenaked Ladies (The Beach Boys)
"Punk Rock Girl" by The Dead Milkmen (Minnie Pearl, the Duke of Earl)
"Renegades of Funk" by Rage Against the Machine (Chief Sitting Bull, Tom Paine, Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X)
"Travis Bickle" by Rancid (Taxi Driver)

What do you think?

While teaching a unit on apostrophes -

Valerie: I went to this band's website the other day, and a description of one of their albums said, [writes on board] "this record is among the most influential and successful of it's time". What's wrong with that sentence?

Student: You're probably talking about Rancid, and nothing they did is influential and successful.

Look what is currently living on the window ledge of my office.

Can anyone recommend to me 5- to 15-minute long videos online that cover some sort of controversial subject (anything from clubbing baby seals to whether aliens exist)? I've been looking around the History Channel website but they're all pretty short videos and nothing you can really take a position on. It's not an emergency; I'm just beating my head against the wall trying to make creating a topic sentence interesting.

Today I was a substitute professor. There were 15 kids in the class, and after class four of them came up to me to say they enjoyed the class. Know what I taught them? MLA format and in-text citation. Who enjoys MLA format and in-text citation? I love these students so hard.

I love how if you hover over your own icon, it says "This is you". Hee.

First of all, I haven't answered an e-mail, replied to a comment, or answered my phone for about two months, since I've been revising my Master's thesis. But tomorrow morning it goes out in the mail, and I will finally have a free moment to interact with humans again. So I'm sorry for my recent suck.

Next, if you need me for the next three days, I will be in San Francisco. Mike and I are going to see two Oakland A's baseball games, because this is our idea of a romantic getaway.

And finally, since I've spent way too much time doing serious schoolwork (including writing papers on 45 books in three and a half semesters), not to mention being very busy at my actual job, there is no way in hell I'm reading anything on our cross-country flight besides filthy, filthy slashfic.

I love fluffy stuff and NC-17 stuff and fluffy NC-17 stuff too. I'm a little burnt out on some fandoms, but I'm still willing to read anything. Spander never gets old for me, though I'm sure I've read all the classics three times already. Recently I'm in love with bandslash, and I'm going to save everything from [livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa's FOB link post, but I love all the eyeliner boys who grope each other in pictures, so any band will do.

The point is, if you would like to rec any slashfic for me, I'd love to read it. Thanks.
